Cancer Pain

Causes and Symptoms
Cancer pain can be challenging to manage, often not responding well to standard treatments.
While not every individual diagnosed with cancer will experience pain, approximately one in three patients undergoing treatment initially report pain. Additionally, up to 75 percent encounter pain at some stage of the disease's progression.
For those with advanced cancer, the likelihood of experiencing pain increases significantly. This pain can manifest as sharp or dull, achy sensations, and may be chronic or sporadic, fluctuating between mild and severe.
Cancer can invade surrounding tissues, leading to pain it destroys those areas. The primary tumor, where the cancer originated, or regions where it has spread (metastasized) can both be sources of pain. Tumors may exert pressure on surrounding organs, bones, or nerves, resulting in discomfort. Other contributors to cancer pain include:
-
Chemicals released by the tumor,
-
Side effects from treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Surgical procedures can be painful and the discomfort may for an extended period. Radiation might leave behind painful scars and a lingering burning sensation, while chemotherapy can lead to nerve damage, all potentially causing chronic and severe pain.
Sadly, cancer pain is frequently under-treated for several reasons:
-
Doctors may hesitate to inquire about pain or to provide pain management options;
-
Patients may be reluctant to express their pain, fearing they might be seen as complaining or bothering their healthcare provider;
-
Concerns about potential addiction to pain medications may arise for both doctors and patients;
-
Patients might also worry about the side effects of pain relief medications.
The primary approach to diagnosing cancer pain involves listening to the reported symptoms.
