What Is A Sacroiliac Joint Injection?

A Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Injection is a procedure used to diagnose and treat pain originating from the sacroiliac joint, which connects the lower spine to the pelvis. During the procedure, a mixture of a local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory corticosteroid is injected directly into the SI joint. The anesthetic helps provide immediate pain relief, while the corticosteroid reduces inflammation over time, offering longer-lasting relief.

SI joint injections are commonly used to address conditions that cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, or legs, such as sacroiliitis (inflammation of the SI joint), arthritis, or injury. This procedure can be both therapeutic, providing pain relief, and diagnostic, helping to confirm the SI joint as the source of the pain. It is typically done under imaging guidance for accuracy.
